Kansas City is recognized as an important locale of jazz history. The “Territory Bands” of the 1920s and 1930s were a crucial element of this scene: their regional tours and one-nighters across the Southwest and Midwest developed the audiences and styles that led up to and sustained Kansas City jazz.
“Territory Bands, Then and Now” is an all-day event devoted to re-considering jazz history as traveling culture. Expanding our focus beyond the traditional “Territory Bands,” we will explore a range of communities and destinations, routes and regional scenes, past and present.

Bill Lowe, performer, composer, and professor of musicology at Barnard College and New England Conservatory: Prof. Lowe has recorded with Muhal Richard Abrams; Henry Threadgill, Frank Foster; and has toured and performed with Cecil Taylor’s orchestra, Humane; Makonda Ken McIntire; Sam Rivers, Dizzy Gillespie, and many others.
