Façade Caption: Edition Attié. Paris - Façade de l'Église Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre. (Note: Arsène Attié was Archimandrite of St. Julien during the early 20th century, and many old postcards of the church bear his name.
(View of the small tower which, formerly, was surmounted by a needle spire. At present it contains the ancient bell which awoke the Latin Quarter).
North aisle and St. Joseph's Chapel Caption: Edit. Attié - L'H., Paris. Paris - Église Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre. Nef et Chapelle septentrionales de Saint-Joseph avec les Statues Saint-Landri, Henri IV et Barons de Montyon. (Nave and northern Chapel of Saint-Joseph with the statues of Saint-Landri, Henri IV and Barons Montyon). Note: The statues, triskelion altar rail, altar, and painting at the rear have been removed. So have the stairs on the right, the pulpit they led to, and the ugly stovepipe you can see sticking up through the vaults. Both aisles once had a stove between the columns of the nave.
Chapel of the Virgin Caption: Edit. Attié. Paris - Église Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre. Nef et Chapelle méridonales de la Saint-Vierge. (Nave and southern Chapel of the Holy Virgin.). Note: The triskelion altar rail has been removed, and the 17th-century statue of the Virgin has been moved to the south aisle near the entrance to the chapel, which is now called the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament.
Choir and Iconostasis Caption: Edition Attié. Paris -- Église Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre. Le Choeur avec l'Iconostase. (The Choir with the Iconostasis). Note: The altar rail no longer exists, and the top row of icons was removed in the 1960's to shorten the iconostasis.
Altar following the Byzantine Tradition -- at the center, a ciborium containing the Eucharistic Dove which holds the Sacred Elements -- above the Ciborium, a Byzantine cross. -- To the right and left, chandeliers and liturgical fans, or Ripidion. Below and against the altar a bas-relief in stone sculpted in the 14th century. Note: The stone relief was moved to St. Julien from the chapel of the Hôtel Dieu after the chapel was torn down, and for many years it was attached to the front of the high altar. Today it is located on the wall of the north aisle.
Column with acanthus capital Caption: Edition Attié. Église Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre. Une grosse colonne de la Chapelle latéral de gauche est richement décorée de feuilles d'eau. (A large column of the left side chapel is richly decorated with water leaves). Note: The carved foliage is acanthus. An icon of St. John the Baptist can be seen on the iconostasis to the right of the column.
Harpy capital of the choir Caption: Edition Attié. Église Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre. Un pilier d'une colonne de la Nef considéré comme un chef-d'oeuvre de sculpture (A pillar of a column of the Nave considered as a masterwork of sculpture). Note: The capital shown is not in the nave, but on the right side of the choir. Harpies adorn the corners, separated by acanthus foliage.
St. Julien painting Caption: Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre, d'après Bronzino. Edition Attié. (Saint-Julien-the-Poor, after Bronzino). Note: This card shows a copy of Bronzino's painting. It once hung above the altar of the northern chapel, but is now located on the west wall above the door to the sacristy. It depicts St. Julien helping a sick traveler step from a boat onto the riverbank. In the background the saint's wife welcomes another traveler at the door of the hostel. The legend of St. Julien the Hospitaller was popular all over Europe, especially in Italy, where there are many frescoes and paintings of him.
