Dataset for the Article:

Donald P. Haider-Markel and Kenneth J. Meier, "The Politics of Gay and Lesbian Rights: Expanding the Scope of the Conflict, Journal of Politics 58(2):332-49 (1996)

Dataset for The gay rights data set contains all the variables used in the analysis for Haider-Markel and Meier, "The Politics of Gay and Lesbian Rights: Expanding the Scope of the Conflict, Journal of Politics 58(2): (1996). There are two files-- gaydata1.dat and gaydata2.dat. All are ASCI files. The files are structured as follows: There are several lines of text that describe the variables in the order that they appear. That is, the first variable name listed corresponds to the data in the first column after the state or county name, etc; the line also contains a label. These lines are followed by lines of data, identified by state or county.

To use these data sets with your software, you may have to edit the data set to eliminate the variable names. This is done most easily with a word processor program, outputing the result as DOS text. Gaydata1.dat contains the variables for the 50 state data set used for tables 1 and 2. You can also access the labels for this data with Labels and the data in SPSS with gay-data1.sav

Gaydata2.dat contains the variables for the analysis of referenda in Colorado and Oregon and found in tables 3 and 4. Exactly how each variable was operationalized is discussed in the article. There are no missing data. Each variable in the state data set was subjected to a log transformation. If the variable had some zero values, a constant of one was added to the variable before logging. If you want the state level variables before they were logged send an email to prex@lark.cc.ukans.edu and specify precisely which variables are of interest to you.
