AbGradCon
2008
(Astrobiology Graduate Conference) is an international,
interdisciplinary conference for early-career astrobiologists (graduate
students and recent post-doctoral fellows in areas relevant to
astrobiology) tied to AbSciCon 08, to be held on April 13-14 in Santa
Clara, CA, USA. It aims to improve the quality of future
astrobiological research by building capacity in astrobiologists at the
earliest point of their research careers. It has already produced
tangible outputs such as the publication of an Astrobiology primer and
the creation of an active international network of
early-career
astrobiologists, which is strengthening the astrobiology community. AbGradCon will run from the morning of Sun, April 13 at the SETI Institute to late afternoon on Mon, April 14 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. The main conference will start mid-morning Sun, April 13 with a series of themed sessions, each of which would have an overview talk (to help familiarize attendees to areas outside their own discipline) followed by more specialized talks. The poster session will be on Mon, April 14. Optional pre-conference tutorial sessions in the first half of the morning of Sun 13 April will give a basic background for those who want it, i.e. ‘biology for non-biologists’, ‘physics for non-physicists’- type sessions. Whilst the overview talks for each session will also be giving relevant background (and all speakers will try to make their talks accessible to people from other disciplines), the overview talks will be focused on the subject-matter of that particular session, whereas these background tutorial sessions will be more basic and provide a more general educational background. We are funded by the NASA Astrobiolgy Institute and will be able to fund some of the participants. Questions or comments?
