**Speaker:**Hailong Dao, KU**Title:***A gentle introduction to Algebraic K-theory.***Abstract:**I will give a gentle introduction to algebraic K-theory in the context of commutative algebra. One aim is to explain some cultural background for the talk by Professor Schlichting.

**Speaker:**Marco Schlichting, University of Warwick**Title:***Homology of classical groups with applications to projective modules.***Abstract:**I will explain my homology computation H_i(SL_nR,SL_{n-1}R) for i\leq n where R is a commutative local ring with infinite residue field and SL_nR is the special linear group of size n x n over R. This generalizes the case n=2 due to Matsumoto, Moore and van der Kallen. As application, let A be a commutative noetherian ring of Krull dimension n with infinite residue fields and let P be an oriented rank n projective A-module. I construct an Euler class e(P) in a certain Zariski cohomology group of A in such a way that e(P)=0 if and only if P has a nowhere vanishing section. If time permits I will relate the Zariski cohomology group above with algebraic cycles.
