Testing for Relationships

Identifying Correlation Strength

One way to get a feel for the strength of a correlation is to examine scattergrams, or visual displays of one variable in relationship to the other variable. This interactive Web site will let you test your ability in identifying correlation strength

Push the “new plots” button. Four scattergrams will appear. Using the radio buttons, identify the strength or magnitude of the correlation for each plot. Your score will appear as will the “start over” button. See if you can become one of the Web site’s “top twenty” in accurately identifying the strength of correlations displayed as scattergrams.

This web site from the University of Illinois lets you place points on a scatterplot or you can tell the program to place them randomly for you relative to a specific correlation. The program also displays the regression line. Cool!
