About me

I am a Professor of Economics at the University of Kansas and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research (Cambridge, MA).  From August 2012 to August 2014 I was Program Director of the National Science Foundation’s Science of Science and Innovation (SciSIP) program.  From 2001 through 2006 I was director of the Center for Economic and Business Analysis in the KU Institute for Policy & Social Research, and from 2006 through 2012 I was Associate Vice Chancellor for Research & Graduate Studies at KU.

My current research focuses on the production of scientific knowledge in academic chemistry and on the role of federal research funds in promoting knowledge production.  More generally I am interested in the economics of science, higher education and scholarly communication.  My other research interests include the economic history of labor markets, the measurement of economic growth before 1800, and gender disparities in the scientific workforce.

I teach classes on U.S. and European economic history, the economics of science and technology and labor economics.
