    Notes

    1) For this paper, you are to use supporting materials (bibliography, notes, comparative illustrations).

    2) Your grade will be based upon
  • adherence to the guidelines below
  • vocabulary and grammar
  • inventiveness of description and analysis (= creativity)
  • Guidelines

You are to write a short (6 pages maximum, plus supporting materials [Bibliography, Captioned Illustrations]) paper based on the paper submitted for Ex. 1, in 3 or 4 parts:

    1) Abstract: 1 paragraph, single spaced, at the beginning of the paper, summarizing your discussion and conclusion.

    2) A Formal Analysis of the object (double spaced and signposted [e.g., Introduction, Problem, Discussion, Conclusion]:
  • a short description of the object should precede your analysis
  • the analysis may consider the object's original use, its place in an art historical development, the significance of its iconography, a problem in chronology, use or significance. The analysis must include at least 12 single-space footnotes that appear at the bottom of the page that contains the text to which they refer; for citation formats, follow the guidelines set forth in my Citation Formats for Bibliographies and Notes.

  • 3) A bibliography of at least 5 sources (books and journal articles); you may also add additional Internet sources; for citation formats, follow the guidelines set forth in my Citation Formats for Bibliographies and Notes.

    4) Comparative material is always helpful in solving or elucidating a problem -- illustrations can be given after the Bibliography; if illustrations are to be used, they should be numbered (Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc.), their appropriate place in the text should be noted (texttexttext [Fig. 1] texttexttext); each illustration needs to be captioned (proper identification of the piece illustrated and a fully referenced source for the illustration; a full bibliographic reference for the source should also appear in the Bibliography).
