    TERM PAPERS / PROJECTS

    PAPER TOPICS; select 1:
  • Athenian and American Foreign Policy
  • Professional Women in the 4th c. (including sex workers) seed bibliography:
De Felice, John. 2001. Roman Hospitality. The Professional Women of Pompeii
Treggiari, Susan, "Jobs for Women," American Journal of Ancient History 1 (1976) 76-104
  • The Economy of Athletics; or Athletics as Social Eventseed bibliography:
Scanlon, Thomas F. (2002) Eros and Greek Athletics, esp. ch. 10
  • Children or Women in Aristophanes
  • Dogs on Classical Athenian Tombstones (in my office I have THE book that gives illustrations of ALL Athenian tombstones)
  • A History of (Corinth, Argos, Samos, Rhodes) in the 4th c.

  • The Term Paper is to be written in 3 stages:
  • 2. Prepare a physical outline of the paper with preliminary bibliography, due 16 Mar;
  • 3. Prepare a draft text, due 13 Apr.)
  • 4. Prepare a final copy, due 13 May.

  • Stage 1, the Physical Outline (due 16 Mar). For this exercise, I am more interested in the Paper as object than in its content (I do expect, however, some content, some idea of how you're going to approach this topic, how you're going to prepare for it).
    Format
  • length: 3 pages plus bibliography
  • footnotes: at least 4, 3 of which must come from journal articles
  • bibliography: at least 4 sources, 3 of which are journal articles
  • Organization:
  • Title (in 2 parts, a general Title with Subtitle that suggests your "take" on the subject; e.g., "Dogs in Ancient Greece: Hunters and Friends")
  • Abstract (1 short paragraph [no more than 50 words] at the beginning, single spaced; everything else double spaced)
  • Headings: divide your paper into clear sections, each given a title in bold

  • Footnotes -- see separate site on Footnote citations NOTES: NEVER have your footnotes document running citations from the same source (e.g., 1. Holbein 1982: 23. 2 Holbein 1982: 24. 3. Holbein 1982: 25). If, for a section, you rely on information culled from a single source, say so (e.g., fn. 12. For this section, I rely on Holbein 1982: 23-5.)
  • Bibliography -- see separate site on Bibliography citations

  • Stage 2: 1st draft of the Term Paper (due 13 Apr).
  • length: 8-10 pages plus supporting materials (illustrations, bibliography)
  • footnotes: at least 16, 6 of which must come from journal articles
  • bibliography: at least 10 sources, of which 4 are journal articles

  • Stage 3: 2nd draft of the Term Paper (due 13 May).
  • length: 6-8 pages plus supporting materials (illustrations, bibliography). Note: this final version of the paper will involve pruning the 1st draft, making it more concise.
  • footnotes: at least 12, 5 of which must come from journal articles
  • bibliography: at least 8 sources, of which 3 are journal articles

Your grades for these 3 exercises will be based upon
    • adherence to the guidelines
    • vocabulary, grammar, spelling
    • inventiveness of approach (= creativity, not fictional exhuberence, limited humor)
