Notes
For best viewing results, widen this webfile to at least 25 cm.

In the commentary (not in the headings), CHIC documents (numbers preceded by #) in bold (e.g., #225) are sealstones or impressions.

In the "normalizations" (phonetic readings) suggested below, the phonetic identifications of the Hiero signs are based on Notes on the Signs, a separate study of the individual signs, their resemblances to Linear A/B signs and the patterns of their use in Hiero. The phonetic values of signs in black are considered certain; those in red are considered probable; and those in green are considered possible. With green values, sometimes only the consonant is guessed and the syllable is then rendered as in the following Kv.

A raised asterisk after the syllabogram indicates the reading is doubtful (e.g., *), similarly for the underlined transnumeration and normalization (e.g., 042 A).

CHIC uses scroll brackets {} to enclose what they see as meaningless decoration. JGY often reads them as meaningful and incorporates them into the inscription.

In this catalogue the seals in CMS VI (Ashmolean Museum) present their sides in the CHIC order but number them according to the CMS publication (except CMS VI 102, whose sides are not individually treated).

Comments
The signgroup ( 056-047-031 [#166]) recurs incised on a document, #032.a1, and in the following variants: 063-047-031 (#052.a2), and 047-070-031 (#058.b1), which also recurs undoubtedly as [ 047-070-031 (#020.d). The occurrence of 061 before 031 on #052.a2 strongly suggests that this last sign is the logogram *174. In #032, both X 056-047 *174 and 057-047-061 occur, suggesting abbreviations for <> 056-<070> and <> 057-<092>; the Linear A parallels for the signgroup here, however, suggests otherwise.

Comments
CHIC: 038-077: the sequence of the two signs is not assured.
An initial X separates .
These two observations lead to several options for reading:

1. <* 029-041-056-038-077, or gt;* 077-038-056-041-029
2. <* 029-041-056-077-038, or gt;* 038-077-056-041-029
3. < X * 029 X 041-056-038-077, or gt;* X 077-038-056-041 X 029
4. < X * 029 X 041-056-077-038, or * X 038-077-056-041 X 029

For orthograde readings of options 2 & 4, the pair of signs, * 056-077 KU-RU2, seems to be terminal:
]* *] 077 042-049-016-016-056-077 ]RU2 A-RO3-KI-KI-KU-RU2 (#112.b)
]•* ]•-056-077 KU-RU2 (#113.b2)
-* -094-034-056-077 049-038-029 -E-SI-KU-RU2 RO3-JA-MA (#328)

This last inscription, #328, provides a comparison with option 4:
X * >< 029 X 041-056-077-038 ><
-* 094-034-056-077-049-038-029 (#328)

Comments
b: CHIC: or >< 042-019-009-070.
b: From the arrangement of the signs it is clear that 042-019 belong together and in that order, and that and 009 and 070 also belong together but the order on the seal is not clear - sign 009, however, is always an initial (see Notes to Sign 008), implying two separate signgroups. Compare, however, the signgroup on #061.c which should be read retrograde: < * 009-019-070; and compare X 042-019-031 (#301.d).
If the entire signgroup is not some bad spelling error for A-SA-SA-RA, and if the signgroups therefore really are separate, 042-019 009-070, there are parallels for the second signgroup: >< 042-070-038 >< #163; and [ >< 042-070[ >< #168. This may imply then that 042-019 is short for A-SA-SA-RA.

a.* >< 012-016-062-018 ><
b.* >< 041-031-011 ><

Comments
a: The combination, 016-062, probably ends a signgroup. Compare >< 042-066-016-062 >< (#305.a), which, on the basis of my arrangement of #095 (q.v.), is more probably 016-062 *175. And this in turn suggests that >< 006-062-012 >< (#302.g) is either 012-062 *006 or, more likely, 006-062 *012. Thus, I suggest that this signgroup is to be read with the two flanking animal-head signs separated.
b: The signgroup may be intact or consist of a signgroup plus logogram or a string of logograms; see Notes to Sign 041, App. VI. These two signs also occur together on a Mallia lame and another sealstone: ] ]031-041 (#088.a) and X X >< X 041-031-044 X (#307.d). Although the correct order is difficult to determine, Linear A is full of words ending in -RE and several ending in -RE-; I suggest therefore that is a logogram.

Comments
CHIC: Re: reading this document, see CHIC p. 15 on duplicating signs.
b: The problem is how to split this long string of signs into signgroups. The following parallels suggest five basic divisions:
X *
[X 019-047[ (#176)
047-070 >< (#286.b)
047-070-031 (#058.b1)
092-019-013 (#277.b)
050-019 >< (#297.a)
]*-•[]050-019-038-•[ (#033.a)

A phonetic rendering of the signgroup and parallels clarifies these divisions:
X MA-KI-I-WA-SA-QE-RO-RU-SA-KO-TI-SAKU2-KU
SA-QE[X 019-047[ (#176)
QE-RO 047-070 >< (#286.b)
QE-RO-RE047-070-031 (#058.b1)
RU-SA BOS092-019-013 (#277.b)
TI-SA050-019 >< (#297.a)
]TI-SA-JA-•[]050-019-038-•[ (#033.a)

The result:
X *
X MA-KI-I-WA SA-QE-RO RU-SA KO-TI-SA KU2-KU

For these five signgroups, some Linear A parallels can be adduced (see below).
g: Sign * 061 is large and spans the entire height of the row (cf. #034, #040), probably to separate the signs thus: g1-2: X • * * •
g2: Somewhat similar dotted blobs appear in g1; if the signgroup is * 025-025-077, then perhaps it is related to 053-053-077 (#047.a); see Notes to Signgroups, App. IX.

An initial X may have once occurred in the break near the first sign of 070-045-019. If so, then side b should be read from either end towards the middle:

X 070-061 >[X] 070-045-019 (cf. 070-031-019 on #054, #056)

a: CHIC: should this be divided: 057-034 and 044-049? JGY: the signgroup conflates two common signgroups 057-034-056 KI-TA-KU (see Notes to Signgroups, App. XXXIV) and 044-049 KO-RO3, with sign 056 KU as the homophonic link between the two.

g: The combination, 016-062, probably ends a signgroup. On the basis of my arrangement of #095 (q.v.), the signgroup >< 042-066-016-062 >< (#305.a) is more probably >< 016-062 *175. Knossos Document Set 6, related.
CHIC: Doubts on the seal's authenticity: unusual dimensions; childish engraving; atypical text (although see #294); with these conditions, we prefer the drawing in Chapouthier, BCH 70 [1946] 78-90.
a: see Notes to Sign 13, App. XVII.C: *. May this not be ** 057-013-049? (see "Knossos Sets"). See Inflection Sequence 5a1.
b: For the signgroup, compare 028-070 (#081.a), > 028-070 (#133), and ]* ]029-070 (#052.d); and see #317.
c: It is common on sealstones to insert the logogram between two signs; see, for example, Notes to Signgroups, App. VIII, and Notes to Sign 012, and #054.a2.
d: The signgroup may be intact or consist of a signgroup plus logogram or a string of logograms; see Notes to Sign 041, App. VI. Signs 041 and 031 also occur together on ] ]031-041 (#088.a) and * 041-031-011 (#271.b). Although the correct order is difficult to determine, Linear A is full of words ending in -RE and several ending in -RE-• (-JA, -MI, -NA, -RO, -TE, -TI, -TO, -TU, -WI, -ZA). I suggest that 041 is a logogram indicated and prefixed by the initial X.
