Since both sides concern A-SI-JA-KA and
side b adds U-MI-NA-SI, then perhaps the two sides can be totaled (i.e.,
we could assume side a might record actual disbursements [small
quantities] and side b might record future payments/deficits); if so, then
the total of GRA is 30JEL2, OLE 25, FIC 10, VIN 16, VIR+KA VIN
6. If the
VIR+KA were responsible for transporting(?) the VIN from
SA-RA2,
each would be carrying one-half unit of VIN (unit = 28.8 liters [Docs2];
14.4
liters/person, or 14.4 kg/pers, or 31.7 lb/person); cf. HT 88: 26 VIR+KA associated with 7 units of FIC (56.86 lb/VIR).
Godart 1984, 125, suggests that VIR+KA
are
women; Schoep 2002, 113, n. 81 points out that Itaja may be a woman's
name; actually, the names here almost all end in -A (a feminine ending?: Arudara, Pura2, Widina; and Jaqif ends in the feminine form of QI).

- .1: DA-JU-TE (hapax), possibly "from"
DA-JU; I+?,
possibly "to" SA-RA2. If so, the tablet records assessments from DA-JU to
SA-RA2. Might DA-JU be related to Linear B da-wo, the
place
closely linked
to Phaistos, in the Mesara? Knossos Linear B tablet F(2) 852 records 10,000+ units of grain
there, or approximately 960,000 l.
- The large numbers should imply assessments "from" DA-JU.
- .6: If PA3 records
an amount (70) to be omitted from *521 {SA+VINa} 100, as if
delivered (PA3 seems to act this way on HT 9, too),
then 30 is the result, apparently a deficit (KI-RO);
(see HT 8,
Davis's interpretations & notes).
- .7: E+KA probably refers
to .3: E+[] 2 H K, 2 H having been delivered,
leaving the deficit K; PU might be an abbreviation for .4:
QA+[?]+RE+PU, which would then imply that F (1/8) is smaller than A
(possibly 1/6) and that a delivery of 1/24 was actually made.

If this document concerns rations of figs
per VIR+KA (7 FIC : 26 VIR+KA), it would be more than 1/4 unit figs per
person (cf. HT 89, where the ration FIC to presumed person is 1/5 this
amount); if the unit were the same as the dry Mycenaean unit (96 liters,
or a total of 672 liters), this would give every preson more than 24
liters of figs. Alternatively, the 26 VIR+KA might be the transporters
of the figs (cf. HT 28a.4: VIR+KA VINa 6), with each person transporting 25.8 liters of figs (25.8 kg = 56.86 lbs).
.2: Here,
a logogram is followed by a word;
Duhoux (in Morpogo-Davies and Duhoux
1984: 20-21, 59 n. 27) suggests that
this is an example of "double
writing," where a logogram is spelled out,
and, if so, KI-KI-NA should
mean fig. It has also been suggested that the
logogram NI derives
acrophonically from a (Minoan) word "nikuleon,"
attested by Hesychius for
"figs" (G. Neumann, "Nikuleon," Glotta 40 (1962)
51-54). Perhaps the two
terms characterize "fresh" and "dried" figs or
"green" and "black"
figs. Another occurrence of "double writing" might occur on KN Za 19:
MI-NA, where MI-NA might be the word for *118
; cf. ZA 21a.7 where this may recur.
.4-6: probably a list of people by name
.4 & .5: KU-PA3-PA3/NU; cf. KU-ZU-NI (HT 85a.4) & KU-PA-ZU (KH
5.3-4); PA-JA-RE on HT 29.2 and ZA 10b.5-6.

Apparently the three names concern personnel (sign *305 occurs on HT

deliberate, the second name contributing an amount of the second set plus
some of the third, the third name contributing only an amount of the third

It is possible that side a first presents four lists:
- list 1 (line a1): PA3-NI-NA GRA PA3 (a.1-4/5; the PA3 probably
repeats that this was PA3-NI-NA GRA, as opposed to GRA+PA [processed
GRA?: Homepage §11, *120]) total: 12+43 1/2 + 5 1/2 1/6
- list 2 (lines a3-4): I GRA+PA "to" A-SE 26 3/4, SA-RA2 20 (I GRA+PA omitted but implied according to the Continuity Principle [Homepage §18], and also because no commodity is ever listed as "from" TE SA-RA2; Homepage §10, TE/TI), and "to" I GRA+PA to QA-QA-RU 5 (since I GRA+PA was omitted before SA-RA2 because nothing is ever "from" SA-RA2, the destination transaction term is restated here for clarity).
- list 3 (lines a5-7): VIR-I (a.5-7) 6 ("personnel" "to"; i.e., porters) (6 is the typical number in a cohort; see Homepage §11 VIR); see a.9 KA 4), plus 1 1/2 (?) associated with DE-JU-KU and 3 associated with O-TI-•.
- list 4 (lines a7): two pairs of vessels associated with DA-RI-DA: *406VAS (a conical basket with lid and two vertical handles:
), and another vase-type, drawn in a sketchier, more abstract and linear form on the next line as *343
. The two types of containers seem similar in shape, *406VAS having a lid and *343 looking like a closed vessel with two stubby feet and flimsy, prong-like handles.
There then follows a summary (a.8-9):
- PA3-NI-NA [GRA PA3, JY presumes]
- ]PA-SE-JA [i.e. GRA] from PA3-NI-NA 20, referring to the GRA "to" SA-RA2?;
the 10 porters (with 1/8[ something, part of the 1/2 above?),
and the 4 containers, now identified collectively by logogram as KA.
- Side b totals ]165 1/8? something and then lists deficits.

Side a presents 2 lists. The first list, a.1-3, headed by KA-PA, gives
various kinds of
personnel. The second list a.3-5, originally contained at least 3 names:
a.3-4: SA-RA2 associated with commestibles *303 and FIC and possibly another one or two. The duplication of *303 and FIC in a.4 implies a name and at least one commestible has been lost on that line, ending in ]2, and continuing with *318-*306, *303, and FIC, and perhaps another one or two commodities. The duplication in a.5 implies another name and at least one commestible has been lost on that line, ending with ]14 J.

Side b comprises two more separate lists, apparently one of deficits
(b.1: KI-RO) of personnel listed by a name (place?) and another (also of
personnel?) headed by *86.Here, most of the document concerns
personnel, but SA-RA2 is concerned with *303, FIC, perhaps some other
food (a.4: ]2, *318-*306 11). HT 94 records personnel and
commodities (including *303), and notes a deficit (b.1: KI-RO) that
totals (b.3: KU-RO) 5; HT Wc 3017 may record the disbursement of
this amount. If so,the retention of the roundel may reinforce the identification of HT as SA-RA2.

the resulting signgroup *31-*332 *704/E is not listed in its "Index des

occurrence on side b, seems similar to the size and placement of

unlikely, but JGY has no explanation for how the numbers might work.
5: a space between NE 1 and KI-RA, lending support to the following supposition by Schoep that
KI-RA is a transaction term.
5: Schoep (1994-95, 71, n. 60), taking a lead from GORILA (which
suggests separating PA3 from DA-KU-SE-NE), implies the following:
PA3
DA-KU-SE-NE[ 6 J
DA-KU-NA

KI-RA ("balance") 5 J
Using Davis's interpretation of HT 8, we would then expect
PA3 DA-KU-SE-NE to anticipate an omission of 6J, but
an addition of 1 on line .4-5 results in a new balace/omission of
5J.

a.6: KU-RO totals the 10 (personnel?) in lines a.1-5
a.6/7: the
rule there
apparently introduces a second section on side a, headed by SA-TA
(cf. HT 42.1)Side b
therefore presents a third section headed by QIf-TU-NE,
a heading on HT 7b.1 and HT 87.1.
MA-KA-RI-TE, QIf-TU-NE and DI-KI-SE
appear in HT 87, and in both HT 87 & HT 117, QIf-TU-NE (as
heading or part of the heading)
and DI-KI-SE (as name in a list) appear in the same paragraph.
SA-TA, QIf-TU-NE, and MA-KA-RI-TE
may be regions or people supplying personnel.

The numbers here are interesting (even if
they do not quite total KU-RO's 160): each unit of *327 could be distributed per pair VIR. The number 10 recurs: KO-JA 10, JA-*345 10, *306-TU 2 + *327-JU 8 = 10. The second list, following TI 7, consists of names that rely on rare signs: JA-*345 (hapax here, see below), *306-TU (*306 possibly MUL, see below), *327-JU (*327 repeated from line .1?); could they form some group?
.1: *327 may be AES (B *140; Palaima 1988:

a.7-9: the total (KU-RO) of OLIV, 93
J
is
correct.
a.6-7 apparently expresses a ratio between *308 and OLIV: *308
is booked as 4E KIRO JE (E = 1/4, J = 1/2), which totals 5, therefore 1/3
of OLIV 15.
This leads us to calculate the values of the fractions H, A[, and
X.
a.7-9 present totals: OLIV 93J and *308 31H (25H+6). If 31H is
1/3 of 93J, then H = 1/6.
a.4-5 presents OLIV 16 and *308 4 3/4 + A[. If 4 3/4 + A[ is 1/3
of 16, or 5 1/3, then 5 1/3 - 4 3/4 = A[, or 7/12 = A[.
Quantity X is more problematic. It is listed twice. Line a.1-2
presents 31 OLIV and 9EX *308; If 9 1/4 + X = 10 1/3 (1/3 of 31), then X =
13/12. Line a.2-3 presents 31J OLIV and 8JEX. If 8 3/4 + X
is
10 1/2 (1/3 of 31 1/2), then X = 7/4 or 21/12. The
difference between the two derived values for X and X is 2/3
(21/12 - 13/12 = 8/12). The reading 8JEX needs therefore to
be increased by 2/3.
b.1: Montecchi 2010: 21 n. 38 reads sign *312 a *20 "because of the similar shape and use with Lineaar B zo (see also the ligatre with TELA in HT 38.3)."
b.3: *188-DU also appears on
HT We 1021, 3020; PSE Za 1 (188-DU-SE[, a verbal?).
An alternative
arrangement of side b, based on the Balance Ledger type of accounting
tablet,
would presume allocations of 20 units *308.
Apparently 10 units are missing in general (KU-RO 20 = *188
11-1 = *188-DU 10) and smaller units are also
missing: KI-RO 1JE + 4 + JL2 + EF = 6 5/8 L2 = 5[

.6 | | ]OLE+U {*610} | 6 | J |

JY notes
From lines 3 on, it is obvious that OLE+U and KA alternate, creating two logogram columns
.1: SI-NI recurs once, ]SI-NI-[ on THE Zb 1. Final -NI recurs often enough that it need not be the logogram FIC. Finally, 1[ is a much neater stroke than any of the other preserved units, and it is not apparent what it is counting, unless it be personnel understood, which is likely given that KA is (always?) associated with personnel.
.2: from the transaction stroke after the fraction, the tablet apparently starts a new section. JY does not see any part of *86 and SI is about 2/3 missing.
From the number of words that end in -*118 (A-SI-*118 on KH 98.2; DA-SI-*118 on
HT 13.5, HT 85a.3-4, & HT 99b.1; I-QA-*118 on HT 44a.1 & HT 131a.2-3; QA-*118 (KH 10.3); QIf-*118 on KH 88.1-2, ZA 5a.1, & ZA 14.1; ZU-*301-SE-DE-QIf-*118 on ARKH 2.3-4) it is tempting to separate []-SI-*118
from KA and to associate KA with 3; there is no
word-separator before KA, but there is no word-separator before any of the other occurrences
of KA on this tablet either. Separating KA would make U-*34-SI []-SI here
parallel with U-*34-SI *86-SI-NI on line 1.
.3: MA should be a very careless KA; a short blank area (vacat) at the end of the line
.4: a larger blank area (vacat) at the end of the line
.5: in the photograph KA-PA is not convincing, but another option, like KA 1 J makes no sense since KA otherwise is always associated with whole numbers.
.6: just before the final OLE+U a short stroke, 1
JY gives his reading of this tablet.

governs an unexpressed KA entry at the end of the line, it is possible
that *86-SI-NI in line 1 also governs an unexpressed KA entry of
1 .5: KA-PA is a transaction term; it may total the OLE+U at

-TA-NI- appears in KI-TA-NI-TE (PK Zb 21) and O-TA-NI-ZA-SE (ZA 5a.2-3),
both probable place-names at the east end of the island. And the phoneme
NI-KA appears in PU-NI-KA-SO (ZA 14.2), while the phoneme NI-Kv appears in TA-NU-NI-KI-NA (PL Zf 1).

plaster, E
wall of room WA (Villa, Light Well 54).
P. Militello (email to "AegeaNet,"
1 Nov 2006) reexamined the notebooks and drawings of Stefani & Halbherr
(1903 and 1913) and provides the following information:
1) The graffiti were written on the east well (as stated
explicitly by Stefani, and implicitly by Paribeni, when he says that they were written by a man seated on the lowest step of the staircase along the
East wall)
2) at a rather low level, perhaps 20 or maximum 40 cm high (both for
what I said before and because they were painted on the dark ground, that
is to say on the dark dado or the above red band (both around 20 cm high)
which decorated this wall (pace Cameron 1965, who states that HT 156
should be at eye-level or at the level of a seated person due to a
probable beam (?) impression)
3) before the decoration was made, if Cameron 1965 is right in saying
that the paint had washed in the graffito.
4) The three inscriptions (HT Zd 155, 156, 157) should be written as a
sequence, not the one above the other, since there was no space for such a
disposition.
The sequence in the notebook 1903 is HT 157, 156, 155, exactly the
opposite of the order of publication.
Moreover, Stefani, describing Room 54, says that 2 inscriptions were
found. This statement lets me think that two of these inscriptions should
be written in sequence, so that they could be considered as only one
inscription.
The only candidates are HT 157 and 156, or HT 156 and 155
JGY: since
157 has considerable space to the left of the inscription and its
signgroup ends near the right break in the plaster; and since 156 begins
at the left break of the plaster and has a small space at the right break;
these two inscriptions should then form one inscription.
Inscription 155 has a short space at the left and right edges of the plaster.
So, I suggest the 3 inscriptions were written along a roughly single line, starting with HT 157 to the North, immediately followed by HT 156,
and ending with HT 155.

Notes to HT Zd 155-157
- JGY: The repetitions on 155 of MA-MA & TI-TI seem
too much. Since -TI-TI recurs elsewhere (as in the second statement, and
on HT 96) but MA-MA does not recur in the Linear A corpus,
it might be preferable to read the 2nd word simply as
NA-MA-TI-TI.
- JGY: The similarity between WI-JA- and A-JU may imply
some sort of prefix; -TI-TI may be related to the ending -TE, "of/from"
(Valério 2007). It would be tempting, therefore, to
interpret the two statements as "prefix + of/from-SU-MA-T" and
"prefix + of/from NA-MA-T."
- It is tempting to see
156's NE and *319 as
the same sign,
and to see it here simply
as some kind of divider (Collis
& Valério).
*319 does, however, seem to function as a logogram on
HT 132 (its only
other
occurrence in Linear A). It recurrence on both
inscriptions supports its function as a logogram
(Miguel Valério).
- JGY: If the NA on
155 were also like NE / *319 (it is badly
preserved), we could
then compare 157 WI-JA-SU-MA-TI-TI with 155 A-JU
(NA-)MA-MA-TI-TI
(and with MA-TE-TI [PK 1.8], TI-TI-MA [PH Wc 40a
retrograde?]) and with
JA-SU-MA-TU (SY Za 2a)
- M. Pope, BSA 55, 1960, 204-205, sees
a geometric
arithmetical progression:
unit times one and one-half of
preceding unit: 1, 1 1/2, 2 1/4, 3 3/8
- 1
- 1.50*1 = 1.50 = 1
1/2
- 1.50*1.50 = 2.25 = 2 1/4
- 1.500*2.250 = 3.375 = 3
3/8
- 1.5000*3.3750 = 5.0625 = 5 1/16
- therefore: J = 1/2; E = 1/4; F
= 1/8; K = 1/16
- If one ignores NE/*319, the series looks
much
like an Old
Kingdom
Horus-Eye series of fractions (1 = 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 +
1/16 ...) (thanks to
M. Gardner, message sent several years ago to
"ANE").
- J.P Olivier 1992a: TA-JA = five,
and K = 1/16
[Collis: why would the scribe switch to writing out "five"?].
- If
one
accepts *319 as logogram, one gets a
fairly normal inscription (thanks to Miguel Valério) -- although the repetition of *319 runs counter to the "continuity principle":
WI-JA-SU-MA-TI-TI | *319 | 1 |
| *319 | 1 J |
| *319 | 2 E |
| *319 | 3 E F |
| *319 | TA-JA [= 5] K

A-JU NA-MA-TI-TI | *319 | |

LXVIIIi), pierced stone weight (MM IIIB-LM IA
context), weighing 8.40 gr (Militello 1988-1989; Schoep 2002: 35;

Presumably the fraction [1/8] refers to
the weight of the stone weight, 8.40 gr; if this is 1/8, the unit would
be 67.2 gr, which is very close to Petruso's unit of 61 gr (derived from
actual balance weights: Petruso 1992: 63) or 2.5 Q (in the Mycenaean
system; Q = 3.36 gr).
