The Society for Technical Communication. This is one of the largest organizations for technical communicators around; you can find out more information about the profession in general and about becoming a member of this organization here. If you'd like to link directly to the Kansas City chapter's site, you can (they have some local jobs information, as well as times/locations for upcoming KC chapter meetings).
About: Technical Writing. They don't update this site as much as I'd like, but there is a wealth of information here, and lots of links elsewhere.
The TECHWR-L Site. The big mama of all email lists about technical writing is TECHWR-L. I find it impossible to keep up with even the digest form of this list -- too many contributors, too many posts -- but I've often come to the archive to search for a specific topic, and been well rewarded. The link above is to the front page of the site, but you can also go directly to the archives page.
