Research Interests
Psycholinguistics, sentence processing, reading in different writing systems, second language acquisition
My research interest centers on second language (L2) processing of Japanese. Very broadly, the questions that drive my research are: how do L2 learners go about comprehending language in real time? What kinds of strategies do they bring to bear for understanding a L2? If L2 learners’ processing strategies are different from those of native speakers, such strategies prevent them from acquiring a L2 at a native-like level? I am interested in characterizing cognitive mechanisms that allow L2 learners to comprehend sentences and construct mental representations based on them. To address the questions I use psycholinguistic experimentation. This work furthers our understanding of the cognitive underpinning of L2 learning.
