My Personal Statement for Standard 4: Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility
Technology can be used in helpful or harmful ways. The atom can be used to provide unlimited power or unlimited devastation. Teachers must prepare students to use technology in socially responsible ways. This can be done by demonstrating for students the power of technology to improve people’s lives. It can also be done by reminding students of their ethical responsibilities to use technology in a way that helps and does not harm people. For example, teachers can show students the latest capabilities to spread information around the world; however, they must also teach students about the ethical need to be honest in reporting information to avoid slander, defamation of character, perpetuation of stereotypes, and the like.
