The Center for Metagenomic Microbial Community Analysis (CMMCA) is a multidisciplinary research team of investigators at KU whose goal is to provide technical expertise and services pertaining to microbial metagenomics.
Adaptation of methodologies for specific projects available upon request. Feel free to visit our main web page at www.kumetagenome.ku.edu contact us to determine the feasibility or a potential metagenomic project or component.
SERVICES PROVIDED
TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
CMMCA investigators bring broad expertise across several disciplines including research in environmental engineering and remediation, geomicrobiology and mineral production, biogeochemistry and nutrient cycling, community ecology and assembly, gene expression and molecular evolution.
DNA EXTRACTION
The CMMCA is staffed with individuals experienced with extracting DNA from bacterial and fungal pure cultures as well as environmental samples such as soil, waste water, and crude oil.
DNA AND RNA QUANTIFICATION
The CMMCA provides services to quantify DNA and RNA extracts using the Qubit Fluorometer.
FLUORESCENCE IN SITU HYBRIDIZATION (FISH)
The CMMCA provides services for carrying out FISH analysis to detect the presence of ammonia oxidizing bacteria, nitrite oxidizing bacteria, denitrifying bacteria, phosphate accumulating organisms, and glycogen accumulating organisms.
QUANTIFICATION OF SPECIFIC FUNCTIONAL GENE THROUGH QPCR
The CMMCA possesses the necessary facilities to carry out qPCR on DNA samples to quantify specific functional genes.
NEXT-GENERATION SEQUENCING
The CMMCA also provides a comprehensive Illumina Next-Generation library prep and sequencing service. Our staff is experienced in generating Illumina sequencer compatible libraries from bacterial and/or fungal RNA as well as from DNA with high or low yeilds. The CMMCA The customer has the option of sequencing generated libraries on either an Illumina Hi-Seq 2500 or MiSeq sequencer.
DATA ANALYSIS
The CMMCA provides data analysis services for analyzing metagenomic sequence data generated through Illumina Next-Gen sequencing of environmental samples. The CMMCA utilizes the Advanced Computing Facility at KU to analyze metagenomic sequence data in a short period of time.
